Page 56, lot # 229-249

This year Ivar Sundsbø was invited to sign the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists on July 12 in Southampton, the most prestigious honour in philately.

Well deserved!

Congratulations Ivar!

More than a year ago, the well-known international judge and exhibitor Ivar Sundsbø entrusted us his exceptional collection Romania 1864-1872, which was successfully sold in our September auction 2023.

Now we have the honour of offering the second part consisting of nicely mounted collections of later issues and special areas, various older specialties, extra material and duplicates in interesting lots. We thank Ivar for his confidence.

We recommend viewing either at our office, or if that is not possible, on our website where almost everything is pictured. You will see that his collections are highly specialised in prints, settings, types and colour shades. Also including numerous varieties, many covers, specialties etc. The quality is also very high, as could be expected.

Please enjoy the study of this interesting offer from a philatelically exciting country.

It is with great pleasure we can offer the first part of a very important postal history collection of Faroe Islands, built during several decades and exhibited at various occasions. As you will see, it covers all periods of the interesting philately and history of the islands. Starting with the classic period including early pre-philately and the use of classic Danish stamps. Followed by the exciting provisionals due to lack of stamps, the war period, which significantly affected the issuing of stamps and the mail, laying the ground for a great postal history period.

Purser Marks
Used on Board German Steamers in the Caribbean

Page 173, lot # 855-873 (Danish West Indies lot # 749-887

An exceptional selection of these scarce ship marks offered in alphabetical order. Such a wide range rarely comes on the market at a single occasion.

Did You Know?

Page 173, lot # 857

Around the turn of the 19th century, the pursers on German Steam Ships navigating the Caribbean, stamped postcards and letters with a mark, showing the name of the ship in violet colour. They also used ink for the date andoften also to cancel the stamps.

Under lot Nos 855 to 873, mail from almost 20 different ships are for sale. This is the largest offer we have seen. The DAKA catalogue from 1997 has 35 ships registered, of which five in ink only. It is reasonable to believe that 40 or more ships used this method, as four of the ones offered here are not listed in DAKA.

The Paolo Sanguineti Collection

Page 179, lot # 888-963

We are very happy to have been entrusted this exceptional collection of classic Norway in choice quality, built since 40 years back.

Our friendship with Paolo goes way back, we met regularly at important exhibitions, where Paolo was very active already in the 1980s and 1990s. Not as an exhibitor, but always on search for classic stamps and covers in the highest quality and beauty from various areas. Despite being Italian, for some reason he always had a great flair for the Nordic countries and Norway was one of his favourites.

He succeeded to assemble a great number of exquisite pieces, which you may study here. We thank Paolo for his confidence and hope you will enjoy the result of his efforts and be able to take advantage of it, now that he has decided to make his “jewels” available for other collectors. All items from his collection are marked “Ex. Sanguineti”.

Professor Hans Ringertz
Iceland Official Covers
Part 2

Page 235, lot # 1209-1257

Hans Ringertz, MD, PhD, Jub.Dr., FACR(Hon), FRCR(Hon), F.F.R.RCSI, FHKCR(Hon), Professor Emeritus, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm & Professor Emeritus, Stanford University, California, has had an extremely impressive professional career.

After the successful sale in March, the second part of this amazing collection is now up for auction.

Professor Ringertz’ interest in Icelandic philately arose when he was a boy in the 1940s and flourished in the 1960s, when he joined the Stockholm section of the Iceland Collectors (Islandssamlarna). At that time, this society had very active sections in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Copenhagen. Already from the beginning he liked official stamps and soon started building this impressive collection of official covers.

Most official covers are very scarce and many are rarities. Especially the classic ones, many of the aurar values exist only in one or a few covers each. Some values are not even known on covers. Most of these classic covers, not offered here, are locked up in important exhibition collections.

Official covers with later issues are also scarcely seen on the market, which explains why this collection took more than fifty years to build. It is absolutely outstanding in terms of contents and variety including many great rarities, and in some cases unique ones. Most of them have not been on the market for decades!
